Thai Cooking Class

Hello everyone!
First I’d like to briefly talk about last night. We flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai around 5:30pm and arrived about an hour later. Upon arrival we all were excited to throw our bags in the rooms and get out to the market to grab some food and shop around. The market was extensive and had everything you could think of. We found the most amazing paintings and even watched a few artists in action! We also tried bugs for the first time. We bought small samples of grasshoppers and crickets. We agreed that they weren’t awful, but definitely wouldn’t describe them as tasty…

Today, however, we were lucky enough to take part in a Thai cooking class! The employees at the Asia Scenic Thai Cooking School picked us up at our hotel. First, they took us to a Thai market where we were able to see which ingredients we’d be using for some of our dishes today. We were able to explore and become a bit more familiar with the ingredients so that we would be better able to pick them out in the future.

We piled back in the vans and made our way to the beautiful location we’d be cooking at. We started with a quick tour of the area. They had beautiful gardens where they grow all their ingredients fresh including rice, basil, beans, lemongrass, ginger, and much more. We had so many options to choose from and each of us would make our own dishes with the advice from the instructor. We each made spring rolls, a soup, a curry, a stir fry, and a dessert.

Needless to say, we were all extremely full after a 5 course meal. We all left with a cookbook and they allowed us to take some basil leaves to make tea when we got back to the hotel. I’m sure many of us are very excited to go home and cook for our families. This experience allows us to take a little bit of Thailand home with us. Although I think we’ll leave the experience of eating bugs here in Thailand!
