Hello again,
Today we all visited the institute of dermatology for a fun
filled day of learning about leprosy and tropical dermatology. We first
listened to an informational lecture on leprosy, which delved into the prevalence,
epidemiology, transmission, and treatment. The doctor also gave us an overview
of many of the common side effects and reactions patients may experience during
treatment. We then jumped into the topic of subcutaneous mycoses. We learned
about the presentation, laboratory testing, and possible therapies. Then we
took a break for lunch, which was kindly provided right on site!
After we had lunch, we were able to observe in a classroom
setting as the doctor brought in patients one by one and they showed us their
signs and symptoms. About 5 of the 9 patients we saw were diagnosed with
leprosy. Each person was at a different point in therapy. This interaction
served as a checkup with the doctor as many still have many months left of
therapy or had relapsed at some point. The doctor was extremely knowledgeable
as he was able to evaluate the patients’ status during treatment and decide if
therapy should be continued or altered.
The opportunity to see these conditions, that aren’t very prevalent
in America, was enlightening!
