Day 3: Community Pharmacy & Field Visits

Today we visited a Community Pharmacy in Bangkok.

It is owned by a father and son. The father is often so busy involved with many other organizations and is the President of Smoking Cessation Organization. We spoke with his son who is also a practicing pharmacist. He spoke about how they are trying to incorporate refills into healthcare, as there really is not a system for it.

Narcotics are not found in s pharmacy, and the most abused controlled drug is Tramadol. He said students use it with Benadryl and Codeine to make a hallucinogenic elixir. He said the pharmacist must diagnose patients and then can dispense medications such as antibiotics based on test results and symptoms. This pharmacy has 5 pharmacists counting his father, and about 6-10 6th year pharmacy students at a time. This pharmacy is different than other pharmacies as it also has an ambulatory clinic feature. They do field visits to patient homes to assist with blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening, lifestyle modifications, and smoking cessation.

Below is a picture of our group with all the 6th year pharmacy students.

Later in the day we did a field visit. We split u to groups, went into patient homes, discussed the medications, asked about their lifestyle, did a pill count, and they returned to meet with our group. Below is a picture of the pharmacy students interviewing a patient. The patient ran a hair salon out of her home.

We had a chance to sit and talk with the preceptor and learn about the Thai culture. Below is a picture of her.
