Thanksgiving Day the Thailand Way

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving everyone!

Apologies for not getting to this sooner, yesterday was a jam packed day! Sad to leave our latest amazing hotel, we set out excited for our last hospital visit of the trip, Chao Phya Abhaibhubejhr hospital. With a mouthful of a name, this hospital is well known for its herbal and traditional Thai medicine . Before our tour of the actual facilities, we paid a visit to one of the eight farms that provides herbs for the hospital. Run by 12 families, this farm brings in about 5 million baht per year (equivalent to ~$152,000)

First step: rinse, lightly dry, then cut the herbs.

Next step: dry the herbs in open air.

Last step: finish completely drying in the oven.

Along the way we received a tour of the 28 acres owned and used by the farmers. We ran into a plant cheekily known as the 'King of hangovers'. You can probably guess it's most common use.

Here it is in fresh and dried form.

Back at the hospital we spent our time visiting the Abhaibhubejhr Thai Traditional Medicine Museum pictured below.

Above a Thai traditional doctors produces a traditional medication from several herbs to be steeped in hot water and drank by the patient.

Several ingredients still used in Thai traditional medicine and some other creepy crawlies that used to be included.

Our day concluded with an amazing Thanksgiving dinner at the Westin Hotel in Bangkok. Thankful for an amazing meal and great company.

Of course we saved room for desert!

Hope everyone enjoyed their friends and family yesterday (yes you can officially put up the Christmas tree now)

Peter
