Medicinal Cookies and Massage Balls

Hello friends, family and faculty!
Our Wednesday was incredibly busy this week!  We learned about the care of mental health conditions at the psychiatric hospital (Suan Prung Hospital), observed complementary and alternative medicine techniques at the Thai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and ended the day by making our own herbal massage balls.

At Suan Prung Hospital, we were provided with some interesting snacks. After biting into the buttery, ginger cookies, we were suprised to learn that the cookies contained herbs thought to improve brain function. Possibly this mid morning snack kept us sharp for the rest of the visit.
The gummies also served a therapeutic purpose in that they are used as a calcium supplement. . Interestingly, the source of calcium in the gummies is derived from egg shells.

Inspirational words from the psychiatric hospital. We found this sign after visiting with some male patients with severe mental health disorders.

Students had a chance to experience traditional Thai medicine techniques. Brave Brittany volunteered for cupping.

Tom experienced electroshock acupuncture.

Dr. Tanzer sought relief for recent calf pain through the cupping technique.

All of the various herbs that make up the massage balls used in traditional medicine for pain, aches and general health. The displayed ball is much larger than the balls we each had the chance to make for ourselves.

The finished product for three of our massage balls!

Thank you for reading!
