Hi again from Bangkok!
Today we went to slums if Bangkok and were introduced to the Duang Prateeep Foundation. There are 140,000 people living in the slums of Bangkok on illegal grounds, meaning they receive no support from the government. The poverty living on the legal grounds in these neighborhoods receive stipends for transportation and food. We learned how this foundation was established and how they help aid the poverty in Bangkok. They have developed school systems, and opportunities to teach children specific trades such as gardening, maintaining a clean home. Through these efforts children have had better chance to get out of the slums as they grow and often give back to the foundation to keep it successful.
We walked the slums, toured the school and kindergarten, and sat down to discuss the Foundation for the slums. While walking through the slums, we saw families living in metal huts. It seems as if they have no trash or recycling system as the garage was overloaded in every place possible. They also had chicken all caged for chicken fighting.
We have been walking A LOT here in Thailand and booked our first Thai Spa Experience, where we were able to receive a 60 minute Thai massage for $500 Thai Baht ($15 U.S. Dollars). A Thai massage was much different than anything ever experienced in the U.S.. The massage beds are on the ground, and you change into loose pajama like clothes provided. Many of the students utilized today for massages.
After dinner we went to a night market that opens at 6pm. The Silom Night market, was just 4 stops away on the Metro (subway system), costing $46 Baht ($1.50 U.S.) round trip.
ขอบคุณค่ะ [khob khun kha]
That's thank you in Thai,
Reesha
